Yulduz Kurashova, torture victim, challenges acquittal of policewoman

Yulduz Kurashova, a woman from Khasavyurt, the victim in the torture case, intends to seek to bring Maya Akhmedova, an operative agent, to justice; she was acquitted by the court during the retrial of the case.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October 2022, the Khasavyurt City Court sentenced the policemen, Shamil Aliev and Ramazan Saipulaev, to 3.5 years in penal colony each, finding them guilty of torturing Kurashova and falsifying the proofs in her criminal case. The court also found that the above Maya Akhmedova was involved in the falsification; she received a year of probation. On December 15, 2022, the appeal court overturned the verdict. On April 27, the court sentenced Aliev and Saipulaev to conditional imprisonment, and acquitted Akhmedova whatsoever.

Law enforcers detained Yulduz Kurashova in Khasavyurt on March 26, 2020. According to her story, she was beaten up, insulted, and threatened with a drug case. The case of abuse of power with the use of violence was opened when Kurashova complained about harsh detention and forced self-incrimination in the drug sale case.

So far, the advocates have not been informed about the court's arguments when it commuted the punishment of the above two policemen and acquitted their female colleague.

According to Kurashova's advocates, the case figurants did not try to reconcile with her.

"I don't know why the judge made such a lenient decision. I want to get Maya Akhmedova's acquittal overturned; the case files had all the proofs of her guilt ... at a minimum, she should have been fired from her job," Ms Kurashova has stated, noting that what happened to her during the investigation and trial had a serious impact on her health. "I was stressed and depressed," the woman said.
