Makhachkala SIZO head, convicted of torture, disappears in Ukraine

Daud Davydov, convicted in 2022 of beating inmates at Makhachkala SIZO (pre-trial prison) and extortions, has disappeared in the special military operation (SMO) zone in Ukraine.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the court had sentenced the above Davydov, a former SIZO head, to eight years in penal colony; his two subordinates received 5.5 years of freedom deprivation each within the case of beating detainees and extorting money and property. They refused to plead guilty. Dagestani journalists then treated the verdicts to Davydov and his subordinates as unique.

According to the prosecution, from December 2015 to June 2019, the above law enforcers used physical violence against the arrested man and forced him to re-register his ownership of a land plot and an apartment.

According to Shamil Khadulaev, the head of the Public Oversight Commission (POC) of Dagestan, Davydov was in command of a combat unit in the SMO frontline and disappeared there two months ago.

On March 19, 2024, the Russian State Duma adopted a law on the exemption from criminal liability of those called up for military service. The amendments cover the suspects and those accused of minor and moderate offenses.
