Twenty-five years pass since invasion of Basaev’s militants into Dagestan
A quarter of a century has passed since the attack on Dagestan of the militants led by Shamil Basaev and Amir Khattab. A memorial rally and re-enactment of the events of 1999 were organized in the Botlikh District.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in 2019, Vladimir Putin signed a law granting militiamen from Dagestan who fought the militants in 1999 the status of combat veterans and the right to monthly payments and benefits. Members of veterans’ organizations claim that only 520 people received certificates with the status of combat veterans, while most of those who fought the militants were not included in the list of veterans.
On August 7, 1999, more than 1000 militants entered Dagestan from Chechnya being led by Shamil Basaev and Jordanian Amir Khattab. The fighting continued for more than a month.
The people who gathered for the memorial rally in Botlikh were shown a re-enactment of the events of 25 years ago and “reminded of the history of 1999,” the RIA “Dagestan” news agency reports.
Let us remind you that decades later, investigators report about the detention of suspected participants in the militants’ attack on Dagestan. So, on November 2, 2022, law enforcers detained Eduard Taushev and Temirali Zarakaev, residents of the Stavropol Territory.
Cases on participation in the gangs led by Shamil Basaev and Amir Khattab are often falsified, claims advocate Narine Airapetyan. According to the advocate’s version, criminal cases are also being fabricated against people who are not guilty.
