ECtHR recognizes violation of Krasnodar activist Antonova’s rights

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has obliged the Russian authorities to pay compensation to Krasnodar activist Yana Antonova for her arrest in 2017.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on October 7, 2017, Yana Antonova was detained on the Turgenev Bridge, where activists attempted to place a poster with a photo of President Putin and the inscription: “I will leave, and the crisis will end”. A court found Yana Antonova guilty of violating the procedure for holding the action and sentenced her to three days of arrest.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) obliged the Russian authorities to pay Yana Antonova 5000 euros for her arrest. The court recognized the lack of impartiality of the court to be a violation, as well as the delayed reconsideration of the ruling, since Yana Antonova served her arrest before it came into force.

Let us remind you that the European Court of Human Rights continues to make decisions on complaints lodged by activists from Southern Russia, despite the fact that the country has ceased to be a party to the European Convention on Human Rights. So, on June 14, the ECHR recognized unlawful the detentions of activists at protest actions in Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Anapa, and Stavropol.
