Journalist Kevorkova*’s case sent to prosecutor’s office

A case against journalist Nadezhda Kevorkova*, accused of justifying terrorism, has been sent to the prosecutor’s office for approval of the indictment. Kaloi Alkhigov, an advocate of Nadezhda Kevorkova*, suggested that the investigation may be delayed due to the political nature of the case.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on October 21, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow extended the arrest of Nadezhda Kevorkova* until December 6. The advocate claimed that investigators convinced the court to extend the arrest, although there was no need for that. Nadezhda Kevorkova* has been in custody since May 7 on the charge of justifying terrorism. On October 30, it became known that the court allowed Nadezhda Kevorkova* to look through the case materials only until November 8.

Nadezhda Kevorkova* is accused of justifying terrorism for two entries on her Telegram channel, including a repost of a text by journalist Orkhan Djemal from 2010 about the attack on Nalchik and an entry about the “Taliban” movement**. In his article, Orkhan Djemal described the authorities’ miscalculations that led to Muslim discontent.

Earlier, the defence of Nadezhda Kevorkova* claimed that the Orkhan Djemal’s text was not found to be illegal and the arguments that the publication on the Nadezhda Kevorkova*’s Telegram channel was allegedly accessible to a wide audience are not true. The Nadezhda Kevorkova*’s publications about the events in Nalchik in 2005 concerned the torture to which detainees were subjected, and irritated the law enforcement bodies, while the journalist “did not support terrorism in any form,” stated journalist Maxim Shevchenko, a former husband of Nadezhda Kevorkova*.

*Included in the list of terrorists and extremists by the “Rosfinmonitoring” (Russian Federal Financial Monitoring Agency).

**By the Russian Supreme Court, the movement has been recognized to be a terrorist organization and banned in Russia.
