Oppositional Telegram channels report death of a Chechen after torture

Law enforcers have detained a native of the village of Serzhen-Yurt for putting a “Like” to a post that was unfavourable to authorities and tortured him, oppositional Telegram channels have informed.

The 45-year-old Ismail Mukhadiev died on January 31 after being tortured by law enforcers. He was detained on January 30, tortured with electricity, after which he died, the “Niyso” Telegram channel reports. Mukhadiev was detained for putting a “Like” to a post that was treated as unacceptable to Chechen officials.

The “Vayfond” Telegram channel has reported that its sources confirmed the veracity of the information.

In October 2023, Mariana Katzarova, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Russia, noted that enforced disappearances remained a widespread practice in Northern Caucasus for suppressing the dissent.
