Armed incident in Derbent was at least second in Dagestan within six months
The shootout in Derbent, the killed participant of which was declared involved in the preparation of a terror act, was preceded by the counterterrorist operation (CTO) introduced in the Makhachkala village of Semender in March this year.
On April 23, in Derbent, a car driver refused to stop at law enforcers’ demand; he hit one of them and opened fire, wounding one of the policemen. Law enforcers shot the driver dead. The Dagestan Branch of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) has announced that the casualty had been plotting, together with other republic’s residents, a terror act against the local division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), and four suspects were detained.
According to the "Caucasian Knot", based on its own materials and information from open sources, the shootout with law enforcers in Derbent was at least the second incident committed in Dagestan within the last six months.
The previous incident involving law enforcers occurred at night on March 5, 2025, in the Makhachkala village of Semender. During the check conducted by law enforcers of information about the possible preparation of a terror act, several men opened fire. Four people were killed in the shootout. The Russian Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) declared the casualties to be militants of the "Islamic State" (IS)*.
*On December 29, 2014, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation recognized the organization "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL or IS) as a terrorist international organization and banned its activities in Russia.
