Case against Georgian oppositionist received by military court in Rostov-on-Don

Irakli Khufeniya, a resident of Zugdidi, who participated in protests against the policies of the “Georgian Dream” Party, has been accused by the Russian law enforcement bodies of calling for terrorism.

The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don has accepted for consideration the case against Irakli Khufeniya, accused under the article on calls for terrorist activity and propaganda of terrorism.

According to the case card published on the court’s official website, the case materials were received by the court on May 5. Today, the first court hearing has been scheduled for May 23.

Irakli Khufeniya is a citizen of Georgia, a participant in the protests against the results of the parliamentary elections held in October 2024. He is also an activist of the “United National Movement” (UNM) Party, who headed the party’s election headquarters in the village of Darcheli. Irakli Khufeniya was detained at the “Verkhniy Lars” state border checkpoint on January 16, the “Mediazona”* reports today.

On January 17 and February 1, the Sovietsky District Court of Vladikavkaz considered two administrative protocols on petty hooliganism drawn up against Irakli Khufeniya, the “Mediazona”* reports. The article on petty hooliganism drawn, which provides for up to 15 days of arrest, allowed the Georgian citizen to be kept in custody for a month before being charged under a criminal article.

The detention of the Georgian citizen by the Russian law enforcement bodies was reported by Georgian media on January 29. Irakli Khufeniya went to Russia “for business purposes,” the STV Channel reported. Irakli Khufeniya is accused of supporting natives of Georgian who are fighting in Ukraine, the “Svoy v Batumi” (Fellow in Batumi) Telegram channel reports. Other details of the case against the citizen of Georgia have not been made public.

The personal data of Irakli Khufeniya, a 40 -year-old native of Zugdidi, with a note about involvement in terrorism, were included in the list of extremists and terrorists run by the “Rosfinmonitoring” (Russian Federal Service for Financial Monitoring) on March 17, reports a resource that tracks updates to the list of extremists and terrorists run by the “Rosfinmonitoring”.

The article on propaganda of terrorism on the Internet (Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code of Russia), which Irakli Khufeniya has been charged with, provides for from five to seven years of imprisonment.
