Activist reports detentions of commemorators in Maykop

Asker Sokht, an Adyg activist, has reported in his Facebook* page that in Maykop (the capital of Adygea), on the 161st anniversary of the end of the Caucasian War, the participants in an unofficial memorial event were detained.

"There were no public events in the form of marches or rallies in Maykop. But the youth held an event that could rather be called a "selfie session". For them, it ended with a conversation with the police," he has written.

In his opinion, law enforcers from Nalchik could also have limited themselves to conversations with the detainees. "Why couldn't they have stopped at a conversation in Nalchik? Why immediately give such long terms of administrative arrest? All this is wrong," says Asker’s post.

In his opinion, in general, "authorities of Adygea are much more adequate than those in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR)." "And it should be noted that this has always been the case. They always create conflicts out of thin air, and inappropriate hysteria. They don’t respect people; and are not worthy of respect themselves," the activist has stated.

Guys were returned to the police station, and protocols were drawn up.

The day before, on May 25, an unnamed subscriber to the Telegram channel "Republic of Circassia" also reported the detentions of activists in Maykop. "Everyone writes about detentions in Nalchik, but in Maykop too, guys were detained, including minors. The first time, when they were detained near the park, before the march, they did not hold them for long, they quickly released them. But then [a high-ranking republic’s law enforcer] intervened (who is a Russian by himself), and the guys were returned to the station, and protocols were drawn up," the Telegram channel quoted the source as saying.

As of 10:50 a.m. Moscow time on May 26, the MIA of Adygea had not reported in its website about any detentions of participants in the public event in Maykop.
