Funeral of journalist Alik Abdulgamidov takes place in Dagestan

About a thousand people attended the funeral of Dagestani journalist Alik Abdulgamidov. That has been told a “Caucasian Knot” correspondent by eyewitnesses who attended the funeral ceremony.

On the evening of May 28, Alik Abdulgamidov was buried in his native village of Yarag-Kazmalyar in the Magaramkent District. The journalist, well-known for his principled civil position, died in Moscow on May 26 after a long illness.

Life path of Alik Abdulgamidov

Alik Abdulgamidov was born in 1956. After graduating from the Rostov State University with a degree in journalism, he worked as a correspondent for the “Dagestan” GTRK (State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company), hosted socio-political programmes, and prepared reports which caused wide public outcry.

Since 1998, Alik Abdulgamidov worked as a special correspondent for Channel One in Northern Caucasus. He was covering military operations in Dagestan and Chechnya.

In 1999, after the attack by Salaman Raduev’s militants on the maternity hospital in Kizlyar and during the storming of the village of Pervomayskoye, Alik Abdulgamidov was conducting operational reports from the scene of events. The journalist was among the voluntary hostages.

Alik Abdulgamidov was twice awarded the Artyom Borovik International Prize “Honour. Courage. Mastery”, and was a laureate of the Dagestan State Award for Journalism. The journalist was awarded the “Professional Recognition” special prize named after Yuri Schekochikhin.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in 2020, Alik Abdulgamidov refused a medal issued for the 20th anniversary of the defeat of the militants led by Basaev and Khattab; the journalist noted that his colleagues who covered those events were not included in the list of those awarded.

In Words and Deeds

Journalist Alik Abdulgamidov has repeatedly been a speaker for the “Caucasian Knot”, talking about the problems faced by residents of the republic.

In 2024, Alik Abdulgamidov reported that children in the village of Bilbil-Kazmalyar in the Magaramkent District of Dagestan were studying in a dilapidated building in two shifts, while the republican authorities had been promising for several years to complete the new school building, the construction of which was started by a local entrepreneur at his own expense.

Alik Abdulgamidov noted that in May 2023, he returned the Honorary Certificate of the Republic of Dagestan to republic’s leader Sergey Melikov as a sign of protest against the sabotage by the republican authorities of the order issued by the President of Russia to complete the construction of the new school building in the village of Bilbil-Kazmalyar in the Magaramkent District.

Condolences through memories

In his Telegram channel, Sergey Melikov, the leader of Dagestan, has expressed his condolences on the death of journalist Alik Abdulgamidov to his family and friends.

“Alik Abdulgamidov honestly and bravely, often showing real courage, was covering the military actions taking place in Dagestan and Chechnya, the fight against international terrorists. The journalist also highlighted the beauty of peaceful life in Dagestan, the republic’s culture and traditions,” Sergey Melikov reported.

When militants took him to shoot and kill him ... it was a feeling of pride, the pride for the fact that he was giving his life for the safety of his fellow countrymen

“Alik Abdulgamidov was one of the best in this profession. He taught us to be strong and free,” wrote in his Telegram channel Khadjimurad Sagitov, the former editor-in-chief of the “Novoye Delo” (New Clause) publication.

“I asked him about his feelings when militants were taking him to shoot and kill him. Alik Abdulgamidov said that it was a feeling of pride, the pride for the fact that he was giving his life for the safety of our fellow countrymen. When I had a conflict with one of the influential people in the republic, Alik called me and offered to meet. When we met, he gave me very important advice: officials tend to think that all critical publications concerning their person are for sure someone’s order. And as soon as they decide who you work for, they will take some steps,” Khadjimurad Sagitov emphasized.
