Four Tatarstan residents found guilty of attack on military personnel in Chechnya

A court has sentenced four residents of Tatarstan to long terms of imprisonment in a case on the attack on Pskov paratroopers in Chechnya in 2000.

The court found Ilgam Gumerov, Ilgiz Mukhametgaliev, Khaidar Razzakov, and Mukhamedvali Shaikhutdinov guilty, the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) reports today.

“Ilgam Gumerov, Ilgiz Mukhametgaliev, Khaidar Razzakov, and Mukhamedvali Shaikhutdinov have been sentenced to imprisonment for terms ranging from 13 to 24 years in a high-security penal colony,” the ICRF reports on its official website.

According to the investigators’ version, all four of the criminal grouping led by Shamil Basaev and Khattab took part in an attack on fighters of the 6th squadron of the 104th regiment of the 76th Pskov division of the airborne troops. “They committed the attack from three sides, while Ilgam Gumerov, Ilgiz Mukhametgaliev, Khaidar Razzakov, and Mukhamedvali Shaikhutdinov took positions and fired aimed shots from Kalashnikov assault rifles at the militaries,” the Investigating Committee has earlier reported.

Earlier, in September 2024, a military court sentenced Alavdi Batykaev to 16 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony. The resident of Grozny pleaded not guilty, and his advocate claimed there was no evidence in the case file. In November 2023, the Alavdi Batykaev’s advocate and human rights defender Oyub Titiev claimed that none of the victims could recognize Alavdi Batykaev, and the versions about the course of the battle voiced by the victims fundamentally contradicted the testimonies of secret witnesses that formed the basis of the criminal case.
