OSCE will assist Georgia to curb torture
Top government officials and representatives of non-government organizations of Georgia agreed on the National Action Plan against Torture for 2003-2005, the OSCE Mission in Georgia reported on September 7.
The Plan, which is the result of a joint program set up by the OSCE and the Georgia?s National Security Council, was launched this May. It represents a comprehensive nation-wide approach against torture and inhumane treatment in Georgia.
Its goal is to bring the country?s legislation and practice to conformity with international standards.
?This is a major step ahead in combating torture in Georgia,? Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission in Georgia Hans Wesseling said at the presentation of the Action Plan.
The Action Plan will be presented to Georgia?s President and is expected to come into force by presidential decree within the next few days.
