Chechnya: participants of the action in memory of Markelov suggest naming a street in his honour

The action in memory of assassinated advocate Markelov and journalist Baburova held yesterday, on January 20, in the capital of Chechnya moved a proposal to rename streets in their honour.

Yesterday, on January 20, a rally was held in Grozny in memory of Stanislav Markelov. The participants of the action adopted an appeal to President of Russia Dmitri Medvedev, which especially emphasizes that detention of murderers of advocate Markelov is a matter of honour for Russian law enforcement bodies. The audience has also addressed Chechen authorities with a request to name in honour of Markelov and Baburova streets in Grozny and Tanga-Chu village, Urus-Martan District, where Elza Kungaeva, 17, murdered by Colonel Yuri Budanov, lived.

Relatives of Elza Kungaeva, murdered in 2000, are also sure that the murder of advocate Markelov, who represented the interests of their family, is directly connected with Budanov's case.

"I don't doubt that Stanislav Markelov's murder was an act of revenge and aimed not to admit any further investigation into Budanov's case," Adam, uncle of the murdered girl, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, the issue of inviting some other advocate is now considered by Visa Kungaev, Elza's father, who now lives with his family in the Norwegian city of Floro.

We remind you that in about three thousand persons took part in yesterday's protest action in Grozny.

Similar actions were held in Moscow and St-Petersburg. One of them in Moscow was organized by leaders of Russian and foreign human rights organizations - Liudmila Alekseeva, Lev Ponomaryov, leader of the Movement "For Human Rights", Mikhail Kriger, leader of the "Union for Solidarity with Political Prisoners" and others.

Later, supporters of the Movement "Antifa" held a non-sanctioned action - by different estimates, from 100 to 300 persons marched along the Pyatnitskaya Street. About a dozen of them were detained at the end of the action.
