Russia to pay 72,000 euros to Chechen woman for loss of relatives

Today, the European Court for Human Rights has passed a decision on the case of Khadizhat Kaplanova, a resident of Chechnya, obliging the Russian Federation to pay 72,000 euros to her as material compensation for loss of her relatives in Grozny.

Russia has been found guilty of inefficient investigation of the crime. This is the topic of the press release of the Human Rights Centre "Memorial" that arrived to the "Caucasian Knot".

Khadizhat Kaplanova, born in 1930, is a citizen of Russia and lives in Grozny. On May 12, 2001, about 20 armed workers of federal power agencies dressed in camouflage and with masks on their faces rushed into the house belonging to her family. At that moment, Isa Kaplanov, the applicant's son, her son-in-law Ruslan Sadulaev and their neighbour Movsar Musitov were in the house. The power agents made a search in the house without presenting any warrant.

After the search, the agents detained Isa Kaplanov, Ruslan Sadulaev and Movsar Musitov, put them into a car and started in direction of the centre of Grozny. They promised to the applicant's daughter that after personal check the detainees would be released.

Later Movsar Musitov was released. The whereabouts of Isa Kaplanov and Ruslan Sadulaev are still unknown.
