Dagestan: Mekhelta villagers state problems with receiving compensation for disaster damage

Residents of the village of Mekhelta, Gumbet District of Dagestan, have complained to the head of the republic about protraction with decision-making process and payment of compensations to the victims of the natural calamity – torrential rains that hit the region back in 2006, after which their houses became unfit for living, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

After the above rains, in total, 185 people living in 32 households were officially recognized to be victims of the disaster.

On August 29, a complaint was sent to the head of Dagestan by two residents of Mekhelta – Saigitag Shayikhmagomedov and Shayikhmagomed Shayikhmagomedov.

"For the moment, both complainants have received no due compensations for the damage and have to live with their relatives, because of absence of their own housing and money to build or buy some," the lawyer Sapiyat Magomedova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The Department for Dagestan of the Russia's Ministry for Emergencies (MfE) has explained to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the decision on allocation of funds from the federal budget for compensation payments has not been made by federal agencies yet.
