Chechen MIA petitions to make CaT respondent in suit against Murad Amriev
In the course of the session on the lawsuit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Chechen Republic to the athlete Murad Amriev, who stated that he had been kidnapped and tortured by the police in Grozny, The MIA's spokesman petitioned to attract the Inter-Regional Public Association "Committee against Torture" (CaT) as a respondent, said Anton Ryzhov, the CaT's lawyer.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in September 2013 Murad Amriev turned to the Joint Mobile Group (JMG) of rights defenders, which comprises members of the CaT, for help stating that on August 25, 2013, he was kidnapped and tortured for two days in the building of the MIA Department of Grozny. On June 27, 2014, agents of the Chechen MIA went to court against Amriev on protection of their honour, dignity and business reputation.
In the course of today's session, the representative of the MIA for the Chechen Republic stated "an addition to the statement of claim", in which the claimant asks the court to oblige the CaT to refute the information posted on the CaT's as untrue and damaging the business reputation of the Chechen MIA. The claimant's representative also said that he intended to put forward, at the next court session, a similar lawsuit against the website "Grani.ru" concerning the publication: "Grozny resident accuses senior official of the Chechen MIA of torture," says the CaT's today's statement.
The next court session is scheduled for January 19, 2015.
