Mikhail Saakashvili becomes citizen of Ukraine

Mikhail Saakashvili, the former Georgian President, has become a citizen of Ukraine. This was reported by MPs of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian "Petro Poroshenko's Block" Party.

"Mikhail Saakashvili has officially become a citizen of Ukraine," Mustafa Nayem, an MP of the Verkhovna Rada, wrote on his Facebook page.

The information was confirmed by another MP Sergey Leschenko.

"On Friday (May 29), former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili was successfully granted the citizenship of Ukraine. Misha, we want new Batumi here!" wrote Sergey Leschenko in Twitter.

Let us remind you that Georgia filed several charges against Mikhail Saakashvili in absentia, including abuse of power and embezzlement of budgetary funds under investigations into the dispersal of the opposition rally in November 2007, the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili, and the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani. The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia demanded from Ukraine to extradite Mikhail Saakashvili; however, the Ukrainian General Prosecutor's Office refused to extradite him. Mikhail Saakashvili himself has called criminal proceedings against him in his homeland a political persecution.
