ECtHR orders to pay 60,000 euro to family members of man kidnapped in Dagestan

On September 22, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) made a decision in favour of relatives of Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov, who was kidnapped in Dagestan in June 2010. The ECtHR ordered to pay the complainants 60,000 euros of compensation.

On June 24, 2010, Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov with his wife left Moscow to visit his sister in Kaspiysk, the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre (EHRAC) reports. On the other day, according to the human rights defenders, the house of the Abdurakhmanov's sister was approached by seven persons, who introduced themselves as police officers. Some of them wore masks. According to witnesses, the visitors shot in the Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov's legs, stroke him down to the ground, forced him into a car and drove him away. Since then, his whereabouts are unknown. Shortly after the incident, several law enforcers came to the place and gathered spent rounds.

The investigation into the incident carried out by the regional and federal authorities failed to bring any proper outcome. As a result, the mother and the wife of Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov filed a complaint to the ECtHR. The European Court has found out that in the case of Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov, his rights to life, liberty and security, as well as effective protection were violated. The complainants' interests were represented at the ECtHR by the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" and the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre (EHRAC).
