PFPA activists treat detention of Mamed Ibragim as provocation

In Azerbaijan, Mamed Ibragim, Adviser to the Chair of the oppositional Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), is detained on suspicion of disorderly conduct. Members of the PFPA believe that Mamed Ibragim is being persecuted for political reasons and that he was detained after a provocation.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Gezyal Bairamly, Deputy Chair of the PFPA, that on the previous day, Mamed Ibragim was summoned to the Narimanov District Police Department. He was detained as a suspect under Article 221 of the Criminal Code (disorderly conduct). According to Gezyal Bairamly, Mamed Ibragim called her in the late evening of September 30 and informed her about his detention.

Gezyal Bairamly has noted that Mamed Ibragim was detained after the complaint filed by Mikail Guliev, who left the PFPA some time ago together with a group led by Razi Nurullaev, the former Deputy Chair of the PFPA.

At present, according to Gezyal Bairamly, the PFPA leaders are engaged in selecting an advocate for Mamed Ibragim. In accordance with the law, a suspect can be kept at police station for the time period not exceeding 48 hours. Prior to the end of the 48-hour time period, the suspect should be released or a pre-trial restriction measure is to be selected for him. Gezyal Bairamly believes that Mamed Ibragim has fallen victim to a provocation aimed at discrediting the PFPA, and for that purpose, the authorities use the group of persons, who left the PFPA.
