In Kalmykia, prisoners stop their hunger strike, Deputy Chair of POC reports

In Kalmykia, the protest action started by prisoners of the penal colony No. 1, who went on a hunger strike after the death of prisoner Dmitry Batyrev, lasted about one day. This was reported by the Public Oversight Commission (POC) for Kalmykia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in the evening of November 20, in the territory of the penal colony IK-1 in Kalmykia, a body of a 28-year-old Dmitry Batyrev with signs of violent death was found. Human rights defenders have reported that in protest of the death of Dmitry Batyrev, the prisoners went on a hunger strike and sewed up their mouths. A criminal case was instituted on the death of Dmitry Batyrev. On November 24, investigators reported on the detention of three suspects in the criminal case.

No mass hunger strike took place at the penal colony IK-1, and only three persons went on the hunger strike. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Valentina Budeeva, Deputy Chair of the POC for Kalmykia, on November 25.

"There, three persons sewed their mouths up for a day," Valentina Budeeva has said.

On November 23, Valentina Budeeva visited the penal colony. According to her, during the visit, none of the prisoners had their mouths sewn up, and all of them "took food."
