Complaint about investigators dealing with Akhmednabiyev's murder lodged to ECtHR

The investigation into the murder of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev, a correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot", was inefficient, said advocate Tumas Misakyan, who has lodged today a complaint on the case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

Journalist Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev was killed on July 9, 2013, in the outskirts of Makhachkala, becoming the 17th journalist killed in Dagestan over 20 years. The basic version of the crime was in Akhmednabiyev's professional activities.

Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev had worked as a correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" for more than seven years, covering acute topics. Readers of the "Caucasian Knot" nominated him the first among ten equals in the contest "Hero of the Caucasus-2013".

The complaint emphasizes that Russian authorities could have taken measures to protect Akhmednabiyev, who had received threats before the murder, said Tumas Misakyan, who was invited by the "Caucasian Knot" to protect the interests of the victim.

According to his version, authorities also failed to carry out an efficient inquiry into the murder as such. "All possible versions were not thoroughly examined; therefore, the investigation cannot be considered efficient, since it was not carried out promptly, thoroughly and independently," Mr Misakyan has quoted his complaint.

Mr Misakyan prepared his complaint to the ECtHR with the support of Media Rights Defence Centre. In his opinion, the added value to the complaint is provided by the fact that all journalists' murders in Russia were and are investigated ineffectively.
