In Azerbaijan, opposition activist arrested for 30 days

Khatai Nabiev, an activist of the Sumgait city branch of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) is subjected to a 30-day administrative arrest on the charge of disobeying the police. His party colleagues believe that the young man is being persecuted for his opposition activities.

On October 11, Khatai Nabiev was detained in Sumgait by officers of the City Police Department. On the same day, the Sumgait City Court sentenced him to 30 days of arrest, reports Gezyal Bairamli, the deputy chair of the PFPA.

"The arrest of Khatai Nabiev means a continuation of the pressure on the oppositionists for their involvement in the rallies held by the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) on September 11 and 17 in protest against the constitutional referendum," Gezyal Bairamli told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

She has noted that before and after rallies, about 200 pro-opposition activists were subjected to pressure.

"They were summoned to the police, detained, and arrested. About 20 people were sentenced to 1-30 days of administrative arrests. The most repressive measures were used against activists of the PFPA, since our party members took most active part in organization of the rallies," explained Gezyal Bairamli.
