French Senate adopts law criminalizing denial of Armenian Genocide
The French Senate has adopted a draft bill criminalizing the denial of all crimes against humanity, including the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.
Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 22, 2011, the lower chamber of the French Parliament approved a draft bill criminalizing the denial of the Armenian Genocide. On January 6, Nicolas Sarkozy, then President of France, sent the draft bill to the Senate for approval. However, on January 18, 2012, the Constitutional Commission of the Senate rejected the draft bill criminalizing the denial of the Armenian Genocide, since its text was recognized as unacceptable.
On October 14, the draft bill on Equality and Citizenship of France, criminalizing the denial of all crimes against humanity, including the Armenian Genocide, was adopted by the French Senate. "156 MPs of the upper chamber of the French Parliament voted in favour of the adoption of the law. Meanwhile, 146 MPs voted against it," the "EADaily" reports with reference to the magazine "Nouvelles d'Arménie".
