Court increases compensation for three persons detained in Makhachkala shelter

A court of appeal increased compensation for three women who were beaten by law enforcers during their detention at a shelter in Makhachkala when the police came to take away Chechen native Khalimat Taramova. Each of the victim will be paid the compensation increased from 3000 to 15,000 roubles.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in June, the Sovetsky District Court of Makhachkala recognized the violation of the rights of Svetlana Anokhina, Iraida Smirnova, and Maisarat Kilyaskhanova and obliged the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) to pay 3000 roubles to each of them. At the same time, the victims demanded compensation for moral damages in the amounts of 445,000, 519,000 and 630,000 roubles, respectively.

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan increased the amounts of compensations for Svetlana Anokhina, Iraida Smirnova, and Maisarat Kilyaskhanova for the actions of the policemen fivefold, to 15,000 roubles.

A human rights defender from the “Team Against Torture”* called the amount of compensation unfair.

Let us remind you that on June 10, 2021, Dagestani law enforcers and their colleagues from Chechnya came to a shelter apartment in Makhachkala for victims of domestic violence to take away Khalimat Taramova, who fled the republic, complaining of domestic violence. Human rights defender and journalist Svetlana Anokhina, as well as Iraida Smirnova and Maisarat Kilyaskhanova, who attended the shelter, suffered various injuries. They were accused of rendering resistance to the police, but all the detainees were acquitted by the court.

According to Khalimat Taramova’s version, her relatives tried to change her sexual orientation with a ritual of “exorcism of the genies.”

*The “Team against Torture” (TaT, formerly the “Committee against Torture” – CaT) was created by the lawyers who had earlier worked for the CaT, which was included into the register of the NCOs performing the functions of foreign agents. Included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) into the register of foreign agents.
