Relatives of Shamil Djamalutdinov, who disappeared in Dagestan, state his non-involvement with militants

Relatives of the missing Shamil Djamalutdinov told the "Caucasian Knot" that his disappearance occurred after his return from vacations from Turkey, when he was put on "prophylactic registration".

On October 4, it became known that relatives of Dagestani residents Gashim Uzdanov, Pakhrudin Makhaev, Islam Magomedov, and Shamil Djamalutdinov filed an appeal to the office of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial". The relatives of the disappeared men asked the human rights defenders for assistance in establishing their whereabouts. Starting from October 5, they regularly hold actions in Makhachkala, demanding from the authorities to inform them about the whereabouts of their relatives.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 31, relatives of missing Dagestanis held another rally in Makhachkala, demanding to establish the whereabouts of their missing relatives and blaming the authorities for inaction. Relatives of Shamil Djamalutdinov were among them.

According to his relatives, Shamil Djamalutdinov was kidnapped in the evening on September 27 on his way from Manas to Kaspiysk by law enforcers. On October 3, a source from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Dagestan said that Shamil Djamalutdinov had been detained on suspicion of helping IAF (illegal armed formation) members, adding that an arrest statement was passed in relation to Shamil. However, his relatives still know nothing about his whereabouts.

There could be no grounds to suspect Shamil Djamalutdinov of extremism, said his wife Madina, noting that they are "an ordinary Dagestani couple."

Rights defenders state more frequent recent kidnappings of residents of Dagestan by power agents, but cannot suggest the reason.

According to calculations of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", during less than three weeks, from September 19 to October 4, power agents supposedly kidnapped 12 residents of the republic.

"The wave of kidnappings began in 2010, and it continues periodically – we see that kidnappings have started, continue and increase; however, we don't know the reason," Sirazhudin Datsiev, the representative of the HRC "Memorial" in Dagestan, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
