ECtHR obliges Russia's authorities to pay 76,000 euros on two Georgians' complaints

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has found reasonable nine complaints lodged by citizens of Georgia against their expulsion from Russia in 2006. On two of them, compensations have been awarded totalling to 76,000 euros; the amounts on the remaining seven complaints have not yet been defined.

Apart from the compensations in the amount of 70,000 euros, the ECtHR has obliged Russia to compensate the applicants' judicial expenses in the amount of 5000 pounds (about 6000 euros).

The compensation sums on other seven complaints, submitted at different times by 19 Georgian citizens, will be defined later, The RAPSI reports.

On March 26, 2007, Georgian authorities filed a lawsuit with the ECtHR about the oppression of its citizens, of which they accused Russia. Georgia claimed from Russia a total of 70.32 million euros. Overall, 4634 citizens of Georgia claim compensations.

Let us remind you that reports about mass checks in Russia of Georgian citizens began appearing after the "spy scandal" in September 2006. Then, six Russian militaries were detained in Tbilisi and Batumi on suspicion of espionage. According to the Georgian frontier services, in July-September 2006, over 260 Georgian citizens were deported from Russia; and in the period from October 2006 to January 2007, the number of them reached 2920 people. The Russian party claims that on each immigrant a judicial decision was made, and only those were deported, who has violated the immigration legislation.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
