International conference calls to peacemaking initiatives on Nagorno-Karabakh problem

The settlement of the conflict around Nagorno-Karabakh is impossible without the participation of civil society, the participants of the international conference "Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: Origins, Peacemaking and Role of Civil Society", held in Baku on March 14, are sure. They decided to promote peacemaking initiatives for the settlement of the Karabakh conflict in Georgia, Ukraine and other countries.

The conference was organized by the Azerbaijani Public Centre for Caucasus History, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

Rizvan Guseinov, the Head of the Centre for Caucasian Studies, noted that "the aim of the conference was to discuss the ways of peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict."

The Armenian writer Vage Avetyan, who lives in Sweden, stated the need for "cooperation of intellectuals of the countries of the region to achieve peace."

Arthur Agadjanov, a native of Nagorno-Karabakh, now living in Ukraine, pointed to "common historical roots of Karabakh Christians and Azerbaijanis."

Maxim Shevchenko, a Russian journalist and a member of the Council on Interethnic Relations, doubted the ability of the OSCE Minsk Group to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In his opinion, only "regional players – Russia, Turkey and Iran – can do it."

Let us remind you that the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone aggravated on April 2, 2016. On April 5, the parties announced an armistice, but to this day accuse each other of shelling.
