Court refuses to treat examination of Ibragimov's books as inadmissible evidence

At the sitting on June 9, the defence of the Chechen publicist Rizvan Ibragimov, accused of extremism, asked the court to exclude the examination of his books from the case files. The court disagreed with defence's arguments.

In July 2016, in Chechnya, the court found books written by Rizvan Ibragimov as extremist. The publicist claimed that he was kidnapped by law enforcers in April 2016 and then tortured with electric current.

"We disagreed with the conclusions of the examination," the advocate Sultan Kasumov told the "Caucasian Knot". "During eight days, an expert with four months' work experience made conclusions on five books. We asked to exclude them as inadmissible evidence. The court refused to do this. We again raised the issue that experts fail to appear at the trial and demanded to bring them by force. The judge stated that it was not important, as she was looking at other arguments. However, we recalled that the judgement on initiating the case stated that the basis thereof was the application of Paizulaeva, a resident of Gudermes, and an expert's conclusion. Based on these two documents, the case was initiated. The court found that Paizulaeva has a loss of memory; and experts all fled: some are on vacations, some are busy, others were fired," said the advocate.

Let us remind you that Zaira Paizulaeva wrote her application, when she passed her practice at the republic's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). Then, while still a student, Paizulaeva bought Ibrahimov's books at the marketplace; and having read them, as she claims, she saw signs of extremism in author's statements. Zaira Paizulaeva was questioned at court on June 6. During the interrogation, she could not recall her claims against Ibragimov's books.
