Prisoner sentenced in case of Anna Politkovskaya's murder dies in Vologda colony

Lom-Ali Gaitukaev died at the penal colony IK-5 of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) Department for the Vologda Region, also known as the Vologda Pyatak. He was accused of involvement in the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, an observer of the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 9, 2014, the court pronounced the verdict in the case of the Anna Politkovskaya's murder. Lom-Ali Gaitukaev, who, according to investigators, created a criminal grouping, and Rustam Makhmudov, who was recognized as a person who committed the murder, were sentenced to life imprisonment. The other defendants were sentenced to 12-20 years of imprisonment.

According to Temirlan Gaitukaev, a prisoner's nephew, his uncle was subjected to beatings at the penal colony.

In 2015, the defence sought the institution of a criminal case on the fact of beating of Lom-Ali Gaitukaev, reports advocate Elena Kharionovskaya.

However, on November 3, 2015, soon after the court's decision, Lom-Ali Gaitukaev was placed to a hospital because of sharp deterioration in his health state. Physicians recognized him as Category II Invalid.

The advocate has noted that according to the law, the disease from which Lom-Ali Gaitukaev suffered was included in the list of diseases to become the basis for liberation.

According to advocate Tatiana Okushko, who was preparing a Lom-Ali Gaitukaev's complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) about violations committed during the trial, his closest relatives would be his successors at the European Court.
