ECtHR recognizes violation of three Azerbaijani citizens' rights for freedom of assembly
On June 29, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) granted the complaints filed by youth civil activists Ramin Gadjily, Aghil Aliev, and Nargiz Yagublu, who were brought to administrative responsibility for participating in protests. The Strasbourg Court has obliged the Azerbaijani authorities to pay compensation in the amount of 22,461 euros.
On January 12, 2013, Ramin Gadjily was detained in Baku during a protest action against non-combat losses in the army. He was fined by 450 manats (about 570 US dollars). Aghil Aliev was fined by 600 manats (about 760 US dollars) for participation in a protest action with similar demand held on March 10, 2013.
On January 26, 2013, Nargiz Yagublu was detained as a protest action against severe actions of the police against participants of the riots in the town of Ismayilli on January 23-24 of the same year, and she was fined by 500 manats (635 US dollars).
In connection with the death of Nargiz Yagublu, she was represented by her sister Nigyar Yagublu.
The Strasbourg Court has recognized that all three protest actions were peaceful.
Intigam Aliev, representing the complainants' interests, has noted that the Azerbaijani authorities fail to comply with the ECtHR's resolutions and to remove the legislative norms resulting in violation of the citizens' rights.
