US pledges to provide aid to Syrian refugees in Armenia
Armenia will receive financial assistance from the United States to support Syrian refugees. An appropriate law was adopted by the House Committee on Appropriations Committee of the United States House of Representatives.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that according to the office of the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Armenia, as of December 31, 2016, in Armenia, there were 18,477 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Ukraine, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Nagorno-Karabakh, and a number of African countries. Other 14,573 people from Syria (14,000) and Nagorno-Karabakh (573) are treated equal to refugees.
According to the draft bill, the US will provide the support in the amount of 47 billion US dollars for those countries that have accepted Syrian refugees since the outbreak of the war in Syria.
"The Armenian community of Syria remains one of the most vulnerable ethnic and religious minorities, and Syrian Armenians, who have found shelter in different countries of the world, need help," the "Eurasia Daily" quotes the Armenian Assembly of America as stating.
According to the "Eurasia Daily", since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, Armenia has accepted more than 20,000 refugees from Syria.
