Polish authorities receive request on Saakashvili’s whereabouts

The Polish Prosecutor's Office, Border Guard Service and Police are preparing a response to the request of the Georgian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) regarding the whereabouts of Mikhail Saakashvili in the Polish territory, said Lukas Lapinsky, the press secretary of the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 26, a week after the visit of the Ukrainian president to Georgia, it became known that Mikhail Saakashvili was deprived of his Ukrainian citizenship. Kiev will be able to launch the process of Saakashvili’s extradition to Georgia as soon as he returns to Ukraine, said Taya Tsulukiani, the head of the Georgian MoJ.

On August 4, the Georgia’s GPO, seeking Mikhail Saakashvili’s extradition, sent a request to the competent Polish authorities, as Saakashvili had come to Warsaw.

The Georgian party asks if Saakashvili is still in Poland, said the above Lukas Lapinsky. The Prosecutor's Office will try to clarify this issue in cooperation with the Border Guard Service and the Police, the RIA “Novosti” has reported today with reference to Mr Lapinsky.

Mikhail Saakashvili himself asserts that he flew out of the US and arrived in Warsaw by his Ukrainian passport. In the course of his meeting with Euromaydan supporters in Warsaw, he demonstrated his Ukrainian passport and stated that he was not asked any questions either at the US airport or upon arrival in Poland.
