Krasnodar activists demand to investigate gays' killings in Chechnya

In Krasnodar, five solo pickets were held on the day of commemoration of the homophobia victims, on December 17. In their hands, picketers were holding posters with the demand to investigate crimes against gays in Chechnya.

In April the "Novaya Gazeta" wrote about detentions and murders of Chechen residents, suspected of homosexuality. The locals, interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot", said that they had known about massacres of gays for a long time.

Every year, on December 17, the "Russian LGBT Network" holds the Memorial Day for gays and lesbians who fell victim to political repressions, since on December 17, 1933, the USSR introduced criminal prosecution against homosexual men.

On December 17, activists held their picket in the centre of Krasnodar near the buildings of the City Duma and the Legislative Assembly for the Krasnodar Territory, in the Ekaterina Square, and in front of the Ombudsperson's office.

The pickets involved five persons, civil activists and members of the Southern Alliance of Heterosexuals for LGBT Equality.

"This year, human rights organizations and the media reported numerous extrajudicial executions of gays and lesbians in the Chechen Republic. According to Russia's Ombudsperson Tatiana Moskalkova, the investigations into the above crimes are being artificially delayed by the investigating authorities and are extremely inefficient. All we can do to restore justice is not to be silent," said Alexei Korolyov, the president of the Southern Alliance of Heterosexuals for LGBT Equality.
