In Makhachkala, authorities report 7500 stray dogs

In the period from March to December, about 1000 animals were sterilized in a Makhachkala dog kennel, but the problem of catching stray dogs still remains urgent, the authorities report.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in Dagestan, the problem of stray animals became urgent after a body of a nine-year-old girl was found in Makhachkala on February 19. According to investigators, the girl died as a result of an attack of dogs. After the incident, residents of Dagestan began to report the mass shooting of dogs.

A kennel for dogs on the basis of an abandoned farm near the villages of Leninkent and Semender was opened on March 1. In November, the NGO "Ecolife" began to build a centre for helping homeless animals near Makhachkala.

According to the Veterinary Department, there are about 7500 stray dogs in Makhachkala, reported Abdulmunin Ibragimov, the first deputy chief of the Makhachkala administration.

"In the kennel, dogs are sterilized and castrated, and they become less aggressive," the RIA "Dagestan" quotes the official as reporting.

When speaking about the problem of the elimination of aggressive and sick dogs, Abdulmunin Ibragimov has noted that at present, there is no animal cemetery or crematorium in Dagestan, the "Dagestanskaya Pravda" reports.
