Putin promises new personnel sweeps in Dagestan

The fight against corruption in Dagestan will not be curtailed after the presidential election, Russian President Vladimir Putin has promised today.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in January, a group of employees of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) from Moscow began a large-scale anti-corruption check in Dagestan. In the course of this check, hundreds of corruption-related violations and dozens of concealed crimes were revealed, Ivan Sydoruk, Deputy Public Prosecutor of Russia, has stated on February 10.

The GPO's check in Dagestan has resulted in numerous officials' dismissals and initiation of many criminal cases. The case against Abdusamad Gamidov, a former Prime Minister of Dagestan, who has been in custody in Moscow since February 6, is one of the most resonant cases.

The fight against corruption and the clannish system in Dagestan, which started with the detention of high-ranking officials, is being carried out in the interests of the people, Vladimir Putin said today at the media forum of the All-Russian Public Foundation (known as the ONF) "Truth and Justice" in his answer to the question of a female journalist from Dagestan.

"This work will continue," the RIA "Novosti" quoted Mr Putin as saying.
