Mourning day declared in Georgia after miners' death

The Georgian authorities announced April 6 to be the mourning day for those who perished in the Mindeli Mine in Tkibuli. Employees of several mines and enterprises are ready to go on strike, said the head of the trade union of the mining, metallurgical and chemical industries' workers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today six people were killed and three more injured as a result of the mine collapse in Tkibuli.

The Mindeli Mine belongs to the only Georgian coal mining company – the "Gruzugol", a daughter of the holding "Georgian Industrial Group" (GIG).

The trade union activists are negotiating with the GIG on the constant monitoring of working conditions at the mine. If the Group's bosses fail to respond before April 10, the trade union will announce an endless strike.

In 2017, the Amnesty International reported over 10 workplace deaths in Georgia.

In 2017, the Mindeli Mine faced several accidents with workers' deaths.
