With Mayor's resignation, Republican Party of Armenia lost Yerevan

With the resignation of Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan, the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) has lost control over the capital of the country, the Armenian political analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" believe. They noted that Margaryan "had never found himself as the city Mayor."

Margaryan announced his resignation from the post of Yerevan Mayor on July 9; and he never explained the reasons.

His resignation was demanded by activists. On May 16, they broke into the building of the city administration; however, then the Mayor refused to resign.

In the opinion of Armen Badalyan, a political technologist, during Taron Margaryan's tenure as Mayor, Yerevan failed to acquire the image of the capital: Yerevan had problems with planting greenery, development, construction and roads; no new jobs were created.

"But most importantly, falsified elections were held, and the Mayor couldn't be involved in this," the expert believes.

He noted that the post of Yerevan Mayor was the last major one lost by the RPA.

According to Stepa Safaryan, a political analyst, Margaryan's work as Mayor reflected the RPA's activities throughout Armenia, that is, refusal to solve fundamental problems, namely, transports, construction, infrastructure and other ones.

During the Margaryan's rule, Yerevan failed to advance, Akop Badalyan, a political observer, has stated.

"The RPA lost the 'velvet revolution'," he has added.
