In Yerevan, Armenian government dissolves Council of Elders

The decision to terminate the term of office for the Council of Elders of Yerevan was made after it had failed to elect a new mayor of the Armenian capital.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 9, Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan announced his resignation. The Council of Elders scheduled the early mayoral election for July 16, but they failed because of a lack of quorum.

Since a new mayor of Yerevan was not elected, at a meeting held on August 16, the Armenian government decided to dissolve the Council of Elders, elected in May 2017, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

At the government meeting, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced that the date of the early elections to the Council of Elders of Yerevan will be scheduled by the Central Election Commission (CEC), reports the release disseminated by the press service of the Armenian Prime Minister.

The elections will be held within 30-40 days after the publication of the government resolution, Nikol Pashinyan explained. The Prime Minister has also added that elections of such scale will be the first for the new government.

"We are to ensure free, fair, and democratic elections," stated Nikol Pashinyan. He has also called on the law enforcement bodies to stay alert against possible falsifiers.
