Law enforcers deny death of Gazakh resident after police torture

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Azerbaijan have refuted the allegations of Ulviya Akhundova, a resident of the Gazakh District, about the death of her brother after torture by local policemen. According to the MIA and GPO, the deceased was injured as a result of a conflict with another resident of the Gazakh District, who was detained. However, Akhundova is convinced that the torture has caused her brother's death.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 25, Ulviya Akhundova stated that her brother was detained by law enforcers and killed after torture.

In the evening on September 27, the press services of the MIA and GPO of Azerbaijan issued a joint release about the death of Elmir (in social networks and media his name is also given as Teimur, – note of the "Caucasian Knot") Akhundov, a resident of the Gazakh District.

According to the MIA and GPO, the deceased was injured as a result of a conflict with Kerim Akhmedov, another resident of the Gazakh District, who was detained.

Ulviya Akhundova, Elmir's sister has confirmed to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that her brother indeed had a conflict with Akhmedov. However, according to her version, Akhmedov had caused no significant harm to her brother's health.

"My brother was healthy; he couldn't die from one punch. He was taken away from our street. They dragged him on gravel; therefore, his legs were injured. There are witnesses to this, but they are pressed to keep them silent," said Akhundova.

She is convinced that her brother was beaten by policemen. "A man named Murad was beating him. I will seek a fair investigation," said Ulviya Akhundova.
