KChR deputy police boss, accused of torturing detainee, convoyed to colony

Ruslan Rakhaev, a former deputy head of the Cherkessk OVD (Interior Department), the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR), sentenced to nine years in prison, have been convoyed to a penal colony.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 15, the Cherkessk City Court found Rakhaev guilty of beating a detainee to death and sentenced him to nine years in a high security colony. His defence has appealed against the verdict. The lawyers from the "Public Verdict" Fund and Rakhaev's advocated asserted that the court has ignored some defence's important proofs. However, on September 12, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction.

According to the prosecution, on October 7, 2011, Rakhaev beat up to death the detainee Dakhir Djankezov. Another victim, Khadji Djadtoev, said that Rakhaev had beaten him too, but the defendant himself stated that he saw Djadtoev for the first time. The defence of Rakhaev claimed that Djankezov had been beaten up before he got into the Rakhaev's study.
