Protests in Magas receive response in Caucasus

Activists from Dagestan and Kabardino-Balkaria have visited Ingushetia and talked to the protesters holding rally in Magas, while residents of Tbilisi and Volgograd have held actions in support of the demands of Ingush protesters. From the first day of their rally, Magas protesters receive feedback from different regions of Northern Caucasus, Magomed Mutsolgov, an Ingush rights defender, has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since October 4, in Magas, the capital of Ingushetia, a protest is on against the new Chechen-Ingush border. Today, activists have set up a tent camp at the rally venue.

They demand a referendum on the border issue and resignation of the head of the republic, Yunus-Bek Evkurov, who had signed the border agreement with Chechnya.

Visitors from Dagestan expressed their concern over the crisis in Ingushetia and called on the authorities and protesters to dialogue for a peaceful way out from the situation.

Musa Malsagov, a member of the organizing committee of the rally in Magas, has noted that that the events should not be treated as a confrontation of Ingush and Chechen peoples.

Earlier, Valery Khatazhukov, the head of Human Rights Centre of Kabardino-Balkaria, noted the high level of self-organization of the Ingush society, its persistence in defending its interests. According to the human rights defender, these features should set an example for other republics of Northern Caucasus.

On October 9, an action in support of the demands of Ingush activists was held in Tbilisi.
