President dissolves Armenian Parliament

Armen Sargsyan, the President of Armenia has signed a decree on the dissolution of the National Assembly (Parliament), and scheduled extraordinary parliamentary elections for December 9.

On October 16, the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced his resignation. In the first round of voting at the election of a new Premier, held on October 24, not a single MP voted for the only candidate to the post, Nikol Pashinyan. On November 1, the same happened during the second round of voting. This results in the dissolution of the National Assembly.

According to the Constitution of Armenia, if the Premier is not elected by the first round, then, the second round is held seven days later, for which candidates nominated by at least one third of the total number of MPs are eligible. If the Prime Minister is not elected in the second round, the Parliament is dissolved.

The President has appointed the early parliamentary elections on December 9, the press service of the Armenian President has reported.

The political analysts, interviewed earlier by the "Caucasian Knot", believe that the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) had put up with the inevitability of the dissolution of the Parliament.
