Cancellation of search for Ali Bakaev shows Interpol's critical attitude to Russia's requests

Interpol has become more critical when reacting to requests of the Russian authorities, and that has been proved by the Interpol's refusal to search for Ali Bakaev, a native of Chechnya, notes human rights defender Svetlana Gannushkina.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Russian law enforcement bodies assert that Ali Bakaev, a native of Chechnya, was an organizer of an attack on the unit of the National Guard of Russia in the district centre of Naurskaya. On June 12, 2017, an appeal of Ali Bakaev was posted on the Internet in which he declared his non-involvement in the attack. Interpol put Ali Bakaev on the wanted list, but then cancelled the decision.

The cancellation of the search for Ali Bakaev gives hope for a review of other Interpol circulars, says Svetlana Gannushkina, the head of the "Civic Assistance Committee".

The Interpol's refusals to search for Ali Bakaev, blogger Tumso Abdurakhmanov, and others show that Interpol has become more critical when reacting to requests from Russia, Svetlana Gannushkina believes. "Interpol already uses a different way when considering all requests from Russia, not only those related to Chechnya. This is due to the good job of all human rights defenders who have been speaking and presenting facts about persecution and violation of human rights for many years, in particular, in Chechnya. Reports of the 'Moscow mechanism of the OSCE' also influenced that," Svetlana Gannushkina emphasized.
