Schoolchildren tell about forced subbotniks in Chechnya

Schoolchildren and employees of budget-funded organizations were enlisted in large numbers to take part in the environmental subbotnik (community works), held yesterday in the Shali and Gudermes Districts of Chechnya.

High school pupils of the Shali educational establishments, employees of the administration and other state-funded institutions took part in the environmental marathon "Clean Shores of the Caucasus", the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed in a district prefecture on September 13.

Similar events were held also on September 12 in the neighbouring Gudermes District. Here the participants of the subbotnik were engaged in cleaning up the banks on the Chernaya River.

"Right from the lessons, we were sent to collect garbage in the coastal zone. We were allocated a bank section; and we spent several hours gathering garbage and empty bottles. We were sent straight from the school," a pupil of a Shali schools named Adam told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Right in the school uniform we were cleaning the riverbank from garbage. No one said anything in advance. The teacher simply warned that we had to go to a subbotnik, and that's all," Madina, another schoolgirl, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
