US and EU react to protests in Tbilisi

On November 17, in their joint statement, the EU Delegation and the US Embassy to Georgia called on supporters of the opposition, involved in protests, and the Georgian government to retract political confrontation and to start a calm and respectful dialogue.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that starting from November 14, a round-the-clock protest rally is being held in Tbilisi. The protest began after the parliament failed to pass a project to change the electoral system. On November 17, the protesters blocked the country's parliament. Three rallies of opposition forces took place in Tbilisi; however, despite similar demands on the authorities, participants of the rallies did not unite.

On November 17, the EU Delegation and the US Embassy to Georgia issued a joint statement calling on the opposition and the Georgian government to start a dialogue to find a way out of the situation, the "News-Georgia" reports today.

"We consider it essential to immediately work to restore trust through a calm and respectful dialogue between the government and all political parties and civil society with a view to finding an acceptable path forward," the "News-Georgia" quotes the statement issued by the EU Delegation and the US Embassy to Georgia.
