Lawyers criticize prosecution's proofs in case of Dagestani Shavri Gadjiev

The witnesses' testimonies in the case of the Dagestani Shavri Gadjiev have not been confirmed, while the defendant's guilt is based solely on investigators' assumptions, the advocate believes. Human rights defenders intend to turn to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

According to investigators, in September 2014, Gadjiev transferred money to the banking account of the person accused under the case of financing the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court. Gadjiev had allegedly told one of secret witnesses, with whom he worked at a construction site in Moscow, that he had sent money to Syria.

The witnesses' accusations of Gadjiev are investigators' assumption, Yulia Bondarenko, an advocate, is confident.

She has clarified that Gadjiev was already convicted under the case related to terrorism. He was accused of helping militants in Dagestan by "bringing money and food to some people."

The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" has taken Shavri Gadjiev's case under monitoring because of an "extremely dubious" evidence base, said the lawyer, Galina Tarasova.

In her opinion, this case has highlighted the trend, when "law enforcers are using same people, already convicted earlier, for charging anew."

Law enforcers detained Gadjiev in Makhachkala in November and took him to Moscow. For more than two weeks, his relatives were unaware about his whereabouts.
