Hostage-taking incident occurs on Georgian-Azerbaijani border

Today, Georgian law enforcers have detained an armed man who took a border guard hostage.

A criminal case is instituted against a detainee, a citizen of Georgia, under articles on illicit firearms trafficking and hostage-taking. The suspect faces up to ten years of imprisonment. "As a result of the urgent and efficient acts of the border guard police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the situation was calmed down in a timely manner. By now, the incident has been completely settled," the MIA reports as translated from Georgian by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The incident occurred on a disputable section of the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan, the Georgian MIA emphasizes.

The border guard was taken hostage, the Georgian MIA reports. "By threatening to use a firearm and a hand grenade, he (later detained Georgian citizen, ‑ note of the 'Caucasian Knot') forced the Georgian border guard to move towards a disputable section of the border. [He] shot several times from the firearm during the incident," the "InterPressNews" quotes today the police as reporting.
