Court sends the Ingush activist Myakiev to colony

Bagaudin Myakiev, a member of the Council of Teips of the Ingush nation, was sentenced to one year and ten months in a colony. The prosecution failed to politicize Myakiev's actions, his advocate has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Bagaudin Myakiev was detained in April 2019 and placed in custody first in Nalchik and then in the Stavropol Territory. On February 7, 2020, the court once again extended Myakiev's arrest, although the maximum period of detention expired several months ago, the defence insists. The arrest of the activist prevents the Committee against Torture (CaT) from entering into the case of Myakiev's beating up at the SIZO (pre-trial prison).

At its session on February 20, the Zheleznovodsk City Court of the Stavropol Territory found the 54-year-old Bagaudin Myakiev, a participant in the March last year action in Magas, guilty of using violence against a state official, which was not dangerous to the latter's life or health, and sentenced him to one year and ten months in a penal colony, says the message posted on the website of the HRC "Memorial".

In his speech, Magomet Aushev, Myakiev's advocate, has noted that the activist himself does not deny that he threw chairs in the direction of law enforcers, but he had no intention to cause any harm to them. According to the advocate, the state prosecution tried to politicize the case as much as possible; however, in his opinion, the motive for political hostility should be excluded.

Judge Anna Nikityuk has supported the defendant and his advocate and excluded motives of political hostility from the indictment, says the above message.
