GPO questions female activists after feminist's suicide attempt in Baku

A participant of the feminist rally held on March 8 in Baku was persecuted for the intimate content of her poster and tried to commit suicide. The General Prosecutor's Office (PO) has blamed activists of the feminist movement for the accident.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the women-participants of the march pointed out the problem of domestic violence and called on the authorities to ensure equal rights of men and women to work and education.

On March 10, one of the participants in the feminist march, Aisel Alekperzade, 24, made a suicide attempt, the Azerbaijani GPO has reported. The woman wrote on the Facebook that she had been accused of disseminating defamatory information about one of her acquaintances and of transmitting data on one of the members of the feminist movement to "oppositionists abroad." She rejected the accusations.

Social network users have condemned the young woman for her poster she held at the march, in which she wrote a shocking slogan about the sexual freedom and her right to dispose of her body.

Ms Alekperzade has "fallen victim to an illegal rally of individual members of the feminist movement," Eldar Sultanov, the head of the Azerbaijani GPO's press service, has told the "apa.az".

The Feminist Movement of Azerbaijan (FMA) has stated that Aisel Alekperzade was not among the organizers of the march on March 8, but participated therein "by using her right to the freedom of self-expression."

Aisel Alekperzade herself has stated, in her interview with the "Alternative TV", that her participation in the march and the use of this particular slogan was her personal initiative.
