Law enforcers disclose scheme of coercion to slavery in Dagestan

Law enforcers began checking the information about two men who had been deceived and forced to work at a sheep shed in the Tarumovsky District, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Dagestan reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in May 2019, Oleg Melnikov, the leader of the movement "Alternative" engaged in the fight against slavery, reported that the problem of labour slavery was typical for the whole Russia, including the regions of Southern Russia.

Most of the disclosed cases of forced labour in Dagestan are related to factories for the production of building materials.

According to the victims, a 42-year-old native of the Novosibirsk Region and a 31-year-old resident of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, in Moscow, their acquaintance tried to "sell their labour" by offering them to work at a farm in the Stavropol Territory.

"The criminal put them on a bus and assured them that he had bought tickets for them to their point of destination. Being unaware of their acquaintance's intentions, the men ended up in Dagestan," the Dagestani MIA reported on its official website.

According to the victims, in Dagestan, they were met, and completely different working conditions were voiced to them. "The victims didn't like the terms of the deal, but they had to agree, because it turned out that their acquaintance had not paid at all for their tickets and the men were to pay about 20,000 roubles to a bus driver. The 'employers' paid the necessary amount of money to the bus driver and took the victims to new workplaces, where they were later found by the police," the Dagestani MIA reported.

In their comments on Instagram, many users expressed their indignation at the practice of forced labour and noted it "dishonoured" the republic.
